Well, the title really does say it all, doesn’t it? Yes, it’s true that in July 2016 our august organization, the Vocal Record Collectors Society, celebrated its sixtieth year of existence. Who’d’ve thunk it at the outset in July 1956? For that matter, given our Board, who can believe it now? But survive we have, and although we’d like to celebrate with a real party and bash, our finances confine us to only another regular monthly program, so that we will simply have to forgo the sight of our more rambunctious members indulging in riotous living financed by the club’s coffers (sorry, Seth). And, given both the joy and solemnity of the occasion, we decided it was an ideal opportunity to bring back our Board members and put them on display – at least, those who dare show their faces in polite society to accept the blame. Therefore, for the first time in almost eight years, it will be the Board’s responsibility to entertain you. (Prior to October 2008, it had been almost thirty-three years since the Board’s only prior presentation, so you can see that a very bad precedent has been set.) In case you’ve forgotten, our Board members are Messrs. Bruder, Frumess, Holdridge, Hornbeck, Kurtzer, Limansky, Pearce, Riggs, Wiederspiel and Winner; if you have forgotten, it’s totally understandable.
It seemed necessary to do a program in September that would in some way reflect on the VRCS’s existence, so we decided to ask all of our Board members to come up with three particular favorites of theirs from our various annual LP and CD issues going all the way back to 1959. These would be selections that they have reason to love, or perhaps introduced them to a new singer (a new singer at the VRCS?), or that, for whatever reason, have very special meanings for them. We asked for three selections from each member since we weren’t sure how many would be able to participate (we already mentioned something about daring to show their faces), so that we can definitely play two selections from each participant’s selections, and then perhaps the third, all this being dictated by the number of Board members taking part and the time constraints endemic to Christ Church these days. All joking aside (yeah, right), this is surely an ideal way to celebrate our sixtieth anniversary and we hope to see you all there.
