LISTED TIMES ARE GMT

A Word About Timings

All timings are listed in both Greenwich Mean Time and Eastern Daylight Time. North America is now on Daylight Time. Europe is shifting to Daylight Time today at 2:00AM local time. For those of you who live in other time zones, you will need to make a calculation to derive the time of an event where you live. In North America subtract four (4) hours (from GMT) for the Eastern Time Zone, five (5) hours for the Central Time Zone, and six (6) hours for the Mountain Time Zone. Subtract seven (7) hours for the Pacific Time Zone and eight (8) hours for Alaska, and nine (9) hours for Hawaii. UK, Ireland and Portugal are one (1) hour ahead of GMT. In most of the rest of Europe add two (2) hours (some Eastern European countries are three (3) hours ahead of GMT). In the Southern Hemisphere, Australia and New Zealand are still on Daylight Time (Australia is 11 hours ahead of GMT; New Zealand is 13 hours ahead of GMT).

For those in the United States, it is useful to keep in mind that broadcasts in the evening hours often appear in the NEXT day's listings because they occur in the small hours in GMT time, which is our primary reference in the following listings.

For more information on time zone calculations, double click the time display on the lower right of your screen (if you are using a PC) to display the Time Zone tab, then click on the drop-down menu for a full list of time zones and their relationships to Greenwich Mean Time. You may also let the TIME CONVERTER do the calculations for you.

“Rigoletto”– Giuseppe Verdi
There’s no character in opera more powerfully dramatic than the court jester Rigoletto, whose acid tongue and all-consuming desire for revenge lead to catastrophe for himself and his sweet, love-struck daughter Gilda. Of all the great Verdi works, none boasts more unforgettable tunes than this one. You’ll thrill to the licentious Duke of Mantua’s “La donna è mobile” and Gilda’s stunning “Caro nome,” not to mention the most celebrated quartet in all opera. Dominating the story, though, is Rigoletto himself, one of Verdi’s greatest characterizations—a complex and tragic figure, both pitiful and ferocious, with stupendous music to match.

Conductor— Marco Armiliato
Director— E. Loren Meeker
Rigoletto —Quinn Kelsey
Gilda—Rosa Feola
Duke of Mantua— Matthew Polenzani
Sparafucile — Alexander Tsymbalyuk

Verdi: La Battaglia di Legnano, May 19, 2018

Tune in to hear a rare Verdi opera, La Battaglia di Legnano (The Battle of Legnano). Recorded on the Cetra Soria label in 1951 and remastered.
La battaglia di Legnano (The Battle of Legnano) is an opera in four acts, with music by Giuseppe Verdi to an Italian-language libretto by Salvadore Cammarano. It was based on the play La Bataille de Toulouse by Joseph Méry, later the co-librettist of Don Carlos.
Written as a commission from the Teatro Argentina in Rome while the composer was still living in Paris, he traveled to Rome in late 1848 to prepare the opera for its first performance, which was given on January 27, 1849. Musicologist Roger Parker describes the première as "a clamorous success, with the entire final act encored" and the audience wild with enthusiasm. He goes to add that act 4 was encored at every performance of the run.

SPECIAL PROGRAM: Maria Callas

Sunday Afternoon at the Opera: Leclair, Scylla et Glaucus.
If he had written more than one single opera Jean-Marie Leclair (1697-1764) might have become as famous in the history of French opera as his contemporary Jean-Philippe Rameau. Leclair failed to capitalize on the success of his Scylla et Glaucus (1746) by composing another similar work in the form of the French tragedie en musique. In the 1740's this lyric theater artform, created in the seventeenth century by Lully, was in the period of its final full flowering. Leclair was a virtuoso violinist who wrote mostly instrumental music. His orchestration for Scylla et Glaucus is even more colorful and inventive than anything by Rameau. Dance sequences were always important in French opera. Scylla et Glaucus is unequalled in its instrumental dance numbers. Leclair's writing for voice in the French language is also beyond compare.

Yet the French baroque tragedie lyrique went out of fashion within a few years and Leclair's singularopera passed into oblivion. Two centuries and more later in 1986 Scylla et Glaucus was revived in staged production by Opera de Lyon. (Lyon was the city of Leclair's birth.) In the subsequent recording sessions of this remarkable opera in London it was that pioneer in baroque performance practice, John Eliot Gardiner, who was conducting his own Monteverdi Choir and the period instrument group the English Baroque Soloists, with an international cast of vocal soloists trained in baroque singing style. The French Erato label released Scylla et Glaucus in1988 on three compact discs. I broadcast the Erato release on Sunday, May 12, 1991. Baroque performance practice has gotten even better among a later generation of musicians following in Gardiner's footsteps. Listen this Sunday for Leclair's masterpiece as recorded in 2014 in the opera house of Versailles palace, with Sebastien d'Herin directing the singers and players of Les Nouveaux Caracteres. A different French label, Alpha Classics came out with this new recording of S & G in 2015, again on three silver discs. (3 hrs., 30 min.)
