LISTED TIMES ARE GMT

A Word About Timings

All timings are listed in both Greenwich Mean Time and Eastern Daylight Time. North America is now on Daylight Time. Europe is shifting to Daylight Time today at 2:00AM local time. For those of you who live in other time zones, you will need to make a calculation to derive the time of an event where you live. In North America subtract four (4) hours (from GMT) for the Eastern Time Zone, five (5) hours for the Central Time Zone, and six (6) hours for the Mountain Time Zone. Subtract seven (7) hours for the Pacific Time Zone and eight (8) hours for Alaska, and nine (9) hours for Hawaii. UK, Ireland and Portugal are one (1) hour ahead of GMT. In most of the rest of Europe add two (2) hours (some Eastern European countries are three (3) hours ahead of GMT). In the Southern Hemisphere, Australia and New Zealand are still on Daylight Time (Australia is 11 hours ahead of GMT; New Zealand is 13 hours ahead of GMT).

For those in the United States, it is useful to keep in mind that broadcasts in the evening hours often appear in the NEXT day's listings because they occur in the small hours in GMT time, which is our primary reference in the following listings.

For more information on time zone calculations, double click the time display on the lower right of your screen (if you are using a PC) to display the Time Zone tab, then click on the drop-down menu for a full list of time zones and their relationships to Greenwich Mean Time. You may also let the TIME CONVERTER do the calculations for you.

It starts out with a cynical philosopher’s bet that two beautiful young women can’t remain faithful to their fiancés for 24 hours. As the intrigue deepens, the young women’s affections—and those of the young men—move into a new place that’s risky and scary. At the Opera with Sean Bianco: Host Sean Bianco brings you a full-length opera featuring great voices from the past and present followed by “Opera Potpourri.”

Verdi: Otello (CETRA 1955)

Otello is an opera in four acts by Giuseppe Verdi to an Italian libretto by Arrigo Boito, based on Shakespeare's play Othello. It was Verdi's penultimate opera, and was first performed at the Teatro alla Scala, Milan, on February 5, 1887.

With the composer's reluctance to write anything new after the success of Aida in 1871 and his retreat into retirement, it took his Milan publisher Giulio Ricordi the next ten years, first to persuade him to write anything, then to encourage the revision of Verdi's 1857 Simon Boccanegra by introducing Boito as librettist, and finally to begin the arduous process of persuading and cajoling Verdi to see Boito's completed libretto for Otello in July/August 1881. However, the process of writing the first drafts of the libretto and the years of their revision, with Verdi all along not promising anything, dragged on, and it wasn't until 1884, five years after the first drafts of the libretto, that composition began, with most of the work finishing in late 1885. When it finally premiered in Milan on 5 February 1887, it proved to be a resounding success, and further stagings of Otello soon followed at leading theatres throughout Europe and America.

Opera: Camille Saint-Saëns: Samson a Dalila
V nahrávce pod taktovkou Myung-Whuna Chunga září sbor pařížské Národní opery, titulní pěvecké party byly svěřeny Plácidu Domingovi a Waltraud Meierové, kterou si poté vyslechneme také v reprezentativním výběru z jejích operních rolí. ; Připravil Daniel Jäger. Sunday Afternoon at the Opera: Mayr, Amore non soffre opposizione
It was a German composer, Johann Simon Mayr, who brought Italian opera from the eighteenth into the nineteenth century. Born in Bavaria in 1763, Mayr was a little younger than the Austrian, Mozart, and a little older then the Rhineland native, Beethoven. He long outlived both of them, dying in 1845. Mayr's career was spent largely in Italy. He Italianized his name. His operas continued to be performed in Italy and elsewhere in Europe up to circa 1850. For a while his works rivaled in popularity those of Rossini. It is therefore hard to believe how Mayr's operas in later times could be so completely forgotten.

Now in the twenty first century a conductor from Bavaria, Franz Hauk, has championed the cause of Mayr's music. He has already recorded three of Mayr's oratorios, released through the Naxos label. In 2017 Naxos came out with Hauk's recorded interpretation of Telemaco (1797), an opera seria in the style of Gluck. That recording I broadcast on Sunday, November 12 of last year. Mayr also composed works in the genre of the Italian opera buffa.

In 2016 Naxos gave out the world premiere recording of the comic opera Amore non soffre opposizione ("Love Will Not Tolerate Opposition," 1810) on two compact discs. This is a tender-hearted lyric comedy in the form of the "sentimental drama" in vogue at the beginning of the nineteenth century. Mayr's music is progressive in that there are no recitative passages. Franz Hauk was conducting from the harpsichord when Amore was recorded at Neuburg on the Danube in Bavaria in 2011. He directed the East-West European Festival Orchestra and six vocal soloists. (3 hrs., 30 min.)

War casts its long shadow over this Prom given by Edward Gardner and the BBC Symphony Orchestra and Chorus - part of this season's musical survey suggested by the centenary of the end of the First World War.

A precursor to Britten's War Requiem (see Prom 72), Vaughan Williams's cantata Dona nobis pacem is a heartbreakingly beautiful exploration of the violence of war, its expansive lyricism a natural foil for the compressed drama of Lili Boulanger's choral miniature Pour les funérailles d'un soldat.

Elgar's much-loved Cello Concerto, composed in the wake of the conflict, completes this emotive concert, with French cellist Jean-Guihen Queyras as soloist. (2 hrs.)

The WWFM Sunday Opera: Richard Wagner's "Lohengrin" from the Lyric Opera of Chicago
The age-old story of good being undermined by corrupt forces and the forbidden question comes to us from the Lyric Opera of Chicago on this week’s Sunday Opera and their production of “Lohengrin” by Richard Wagner. Knight of the Grail Lohengrin, son of Parsifal, is sent to Brabant to unify the people and protect the unjustly accused Elsa under the proviso that he does so anonymously and that no one must ever ask his name. Of course, Elsa asks, and loses both Lohengrin and her life as a result.

The Lyric Opera cast includes Klaus Florian Vogt in the title role, Jennifer Davis as his love Elsa, and Christine Goerke as the evil sorceress Ortrud. The remainder of the cast features Georg Zeppenfeld as King Heinrich, Thomas J. Mayer as Telramund, and Kostas Smoriginas as the herald with Andris Nelsons leading the Lyric Opera Chorus and Orchestra. (3 hrs., 30 min.)
