LISTED TIMES ARE GMT

A Word About Timings

All timings are listed in both Greenwich Mean Time and Eastern Daylight Time. North America and Europe are now on Daylight Time. For those of you who live in other time zones, you will need to make a calculation to derive the time of an event where you live. In North America subtract four (4) hours (from GMT) for the Eastern Time Zone, five (5) hours for the Central Time Zone, and six (6) hours for the Mountain Time Zone. Subtract seven (7) hours for the Pacific Time Zone and eight (8) hours for Alaska, and nine (9) hours for Hawaii. UK, Ireland and Portugal are one (1) hoour ahead of GMT. In most of the rest of Europe add two (2) hours (some Eastern European countries are three (3) hours ahead of GMT). In the Southern Hemisphere, Australia and New Zealand are on Standard Time (Australia is 10 hours ahead of GMT; New Zealand is 12 hours ahead of GMT).

For those in the United States, it is useful to keep in mind that broadcasts in the evening hours often appear in the NEXT day's listings because they occur in the small hours in GMT time, which is our primary reference in the following listings.

For more information on time zone calculations, double click the time display on the lower right of your screen (if you are using a PC) to display the Time Zone tab, then click on the drop-down menu for a full list of time zones and their relationships to Greenwich Mean Time. You may also let the TIME CONVERTER do the calculations for you.

At the Opera with Sean Bianco: Host Sean Bianco brings you a full-length opera featuring great voices from the past and present followed by “Opera Potpourri.”

Richard Strauss: Salome, August 19, 2017

Salome, Op. 54, is an opera in one act by Richard Strauss to a German libretto by the composer, based on Hedwig Lachmann's German translation of the French play Salomé by Oscar Wilde. The play Salome is a tragedy by Oscar Wilde. The original 1891 version of the play was in French. Three years later an English translation was published. The play tells in one act the Biblical story of Salome, stepdaughter of the tetrarch Herod Antipas, who, to her stepfather's dismay but to the delight of her mother Herodias, requests the head of Jokanaan (John the Baptist) on a silver platter as a reward for dancing the dance of the seven veils. The final scene is frequently heard as a concert-piece for dramatic sopranos.

Herod – Gerhard Stolze
Herodias – Grace Hoffman

NOON

(2 hrs.)

Sunday Afternoon at the Opera: Lehar, Die Gottergatte
The second half of the nineteenth century was the "Golden Age" of Viennese-style operetta. That was when Franz von Suppe, "The Waltz King" Johann Strauss and Carl Millocker delighted the public with tuneful, lighthearted lyric stageworks. There followed a Silver Age of operetta, an age that cultivated a nostalgia for the Austro-Hungarian imperial past. The leading composer of that Silver Age was undoubtedly the Hungarian Franz Lehar (1870-1948). Der Gottergatte ("The God-Husband, or "Lord and Master," 1904) was Lehar's third operetta, coming just before the enormous success of "The Merry Widow." Lehar would write many more in his long career, and these works became progressively more nostalgic and less comic. The last of them have sad endings. This early one, however, has some of the satirical qualities of Offenbach's famous "Orpheus in the Underworld." In Lehar's operetta "The Lord and Master" ie. Jupiter is implicated in an adulterous scandal among the ancient Greek gods of Olympus. I treat you this Sunday afternoon to an historic recording of Der Gottergatte, made in March, 1945 in Vienna, as broadcast in studio production over Nazi Reichssender radio, just before World War Two ended in Europe. Max Schonherr directed the Vienna Radio Orchestra and Chorus. One of the six vocal soloists is tenor Anton Dermota. The airtape in monaural sound of the live radio broadcast was digitally reprocessed for release through the German cpo record label in 2012, on two compact discs. (3 hrs., 30 min.)

(Aufnahme vom 17.
(2 hrs., 56 min.)

The climax of the Proms Reformation Day is a complete performance of Bach's St John Passion. 'More daring, forceful and poetic' than the St Matthew Passion, according to Schumann, this is a work of almost operatic vividness that brings both a humanity and a painful immediacy to the Passion narrative. Bach specialist John Butt and his Dunedin Consort make their Proms debut in a performance that offers the audience the chance to join in the chorale-singing, reflecting how the work might originally have been heard in a church setting. Rossini's "The Barber of Seville" from LA Opera on Air
LA Opera on Air begins a three opera series featuring Beaumarchais’ best-known character, Figaro, on this week’s Sunday Opera with Gioachino Rossini’s “The Barber of Seville.” Our Figaro in this production is Rodion Pogossov, and the couple he helps to find true love (for now), Count Almaviva and Rosina, are performed by Rene Barbera and Elizabeth DeShong. Rosina’s peevish and somewhat lascivious guardian, Doctor Bartolo, is sung by LA favorite, Kristinn Sigmundsson. After the opera, please join host Michael Kownacky for more music by Rossini, his Cantata in Honor of Pope Pius IX featuring Marilla Devina (Soprano), Paul Austin Kelly (tenor), Francesco Piccoli (tenor), and Michele Pertusi with the La Scala Philharmonic Orchestra and Chorus conducted by Riccardo Chailly along with a sprightly version of La Danza, probably the best-known piece in Rossini’s Soiree Musicale series.
