LISTED TIMES ARE GMT

A Word About Timings

All timings are listed in both Greenwich Mean Time and Eastern Daylight Time. Both Europe and North America is now on Daylight Time. For those of you who live in other time zones, you will need to make a calculation to derive the time of an event where you live. In the United States, subtract four (4) hours (from GMT) for the Eastern Time Zone, five (5) hours for the Central Time Zone, and six (6) hours for the Mountain Time Zone. Subtract seven (7) hours for the Pacific Time Zone and eight (8) hours for Alaska, and nine (9) hours for Hawaii. In UK and Portugal add one (1) hour and in most of Europe add two (2) hours (some Eastern European countries are now three (3) hours ahead of GMT). In the Southern Hemisphere, Australia and New Zealand are now on Daylight Time (Australia is 11 hours ahead of GMT; New Zealand is 13 hours ahead of GMT).

For those in the United States, it is useful to keep in mind that broadcasts in the evening hours often appear in the NEXT day's listings because they occur in the small hours in GMT time, which is our primary reference in the following listings.

For more information on time zone calculations, double click the time display on the lower right of your screen (if you are using a PC) to display the Time Zone tab, then click on the drop-down menu for a full list of time zones and their relationships to Greenwich Mean Time. You may also let the TIME CONVERTER do the calculations for you.

This one might be considered Massenet's "other opera." His Manon is certainly more famous, but Werther is surely worthy of wider attention than it gets. Based on an influential early novel by Goethe, the opera is the story of a man whose lost love proves more vital to him than life itself. (3 hrs., 30 min.)

Friday Night at the Opera: Simon Boccanergra
Simon Boccanegra is an opera with a prologue and three acts by Giuseppe Verdi to an Italian libretto by Francesco Maria Piave, based on the play Simón Bocanegra (1843) by Antonio García Gutiérrez. It was first performed at Teatro La Fenice, Venice on March 12, 1857. Given the difficulties with the original plot, a revised version, with text changes by Arrigo Boito, was first performed at La Scala, Milan on 24 March 1881. It is this version, with its Act 1 Council Chamber scene as its finale that is given today. This 1977 recording stars Piero Cappuccilli, Mirella Freni, Nicolai Ghiaurov and Jose Carreras. Cladio Abbado conducts. (3 hrs.)

Housston Grand Opera: A Midsummer Night's Dream by Benjamin Britten
All’s well that ends well in Shakespeare’s comedy of supernatural error. Britten’s otherworldly score beckons the listener into a surreal realm where dreams become reality and life is as a dream.

The king and queen of the fairies are feuding, two mortal couples break up and make up thanks (or no thanks!) to the juice of a magic flower, and the Duke of Athens is getting ready to wed the Queen of the Amazons—there’s a whole lot going on in the forest just outside Athens! Benjamin Britten’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream, based on Shakespeare’s play, is performed by a superb ensemble cast led by Houston favorite Laura Claycomb and Welsh countertenor Iestyn Davies in his company debut; Patrick Summers conducts. (Sung in English)

Iestyn Davies*, Oberon; Laura Claycomb, Tytania; Norman Reinhardt, Lysander; Liam Bonner, Demetrius; Katie van Kooten*, Helena; Marie Lenormand, Hermia; Matthew Rose*, Bottom; Steven Cole, Flute; Robert Pomakov, Quince; Jon Michael Hill*, Puck; Ryan McKinny, Theseus; Leann Sandell-Pantaleo, Hippolyta; Adam Cioffari*, Snug; Jon Kolbet, Snout; James J. Houston Grand Opera: A Midsummer Night's Dream by Benjamin Britten

Iestyn Davies*, Oberon; Laura Claycomb, Tytania; Norman Reinhardt, Lysander; Liam Bonner, Demetrius; Katie van Kooten*, Helena; Marie Lenormand, Hermia; Matthew Rose*, Bottom; Steven Cole, Flute; Robert Pomakov, Quince; Jon Michael Hill*, Puck; Ryan McKinny, Theseus; Leann Sandell-Pantaleo, Hippolyta; Adam Cioffari*, Snug; Jon Kolbet, Snout; James J. Kee, Starvling;

Patrick Summers, Conductor; Neil Armfield, Director; Dale Ferguson*, Set and Costume Designer; Damien Cooper*, Lighting Designer; Brian Byrnes, Fight Director; Karen Reeves, Children's Chorus Director [* Houston Grand Opera sebut] (4 hrs.)

NPR World of Opera: ANTONIN DVORAK: Rusalka
Glyndebourne Festival
London Philharmonic, Glyndebourne Chorus
Jiri Belohlavek, conductor
CAST: Ana Maria Martinez (Rusalka); Brandon Jovanovich (The Prince); Tatiana Pavlovskaya (The Foreign Princess); Mischa Schelomianski (Vodnik); Larissa Diadkova (Jezibaba); Diana Axentii (Turnspit); Alasdair Elliott (Gamekeeper)
Best known in most of the world for his dramatic and popular symphonies, Dvorak also wrote more than a dozen operas. Rusalka is the most widely heard of them and, arguably, his best. The title character is a beautiful water nymph who falls tragically in love with a fickle human prince, and the opera's music is Dvorak at his finest. (4 hrs.)
